Problem Solving in Numeracy

Last Friday, we had numeracy in our normal classes and was set a challenge!!!

Our challange was...
You have 20 straws and you have to make as many squares as possible - no bending or cutting the straws!!!

We had a great time trying to solve this problem and we all agreed that the maximum amount of squares without crossing straws, was 9.
Then Mr Trutwein let us cross the straws and some of us managed to make 32 squares!

Here are some pictures of us scratching our heads and working hard to solve this problem...

Trip to the Mandir

This week Year 3 visited the Mandir in Ilford as part of their RE topic on Hinduism. They were able to watch the time of prayer 'Arti', ask questions and have a look at the shrine and the different Hindu deities.

ICT in Literacy

Year 3 have been writing non-chronological reports about various topics. 3T chose to write about Hinduism...

When we finished our reports, some children were chosen to Asus notebooks, to present their work!

We really enjoyed ourselves and we can't wait to insert pictures to go with our reports!

Here are some pictures of us using the laptops...

Friday, 5 December 2008

This week we have been looking at stable structures in design and technology. First we looked at examples of different free standing structures and talked about it with a partner. We then used lego, paper and other materials to make our own stable structures.

Here are some pictures of us making the structures...

Drama - Roman Invasion

This week was fantastic! We had a very special visitor in school to see year 3...it was a man from the drama company!!!

We took part in a drama workshop all about a Roman invasion.

First we discussed what sort of a life a Celt would have lead...what jobs they might have done, food they ate and so on...

Then we pretended to be a Celt and we became farmers, blacksmith's and potters. After that we sat in a circle and we listened to a gripping story about a Roman invasion.

A short while later...we had to get into role as either a Roman soldier or a Celt and acted out the invasion!

Finally we discussed how the Celts might have felt and built up a picture of emotions and used facial expressions and body language.

Literacy - Settings

In Literacy we have been looking at different settings and describing them using 'juicy words'! Mr Trutwein took us down to the environmental area and we took pictures and wrote key words on post-it notes to help us later in writing our settings.

We looked at the way the trees sawyed in the wind...

We decided that the roots of a tree looked like a claws covered in gree dust.

Some of us noticed that the grass looked as though it was dancing in the cool breeze.

We had a great time and thought of a lot of descriptive words and put them into engaging sentences.
